Big Dog K9 vs. American Ironhorse Texas Chopper
Big Dog K9 review – The K9 motorcycle vs American Ironhorse Texas Chopper. My impressions from owning & riding these two fine factory built chopper motorcycles.
This is the first video in a series, comparing my impressions of owning and riding a Big Dog K9 and the American Ironhorse Texas Chopper
Big Dog K9 review
The Big Dog K9 is a 2009 model, and the American Ironhorse Texas Chopper is a 2006 model.
Personally, I believe these are two of the best factory built custom choppers ever built!
Basically, if you’re looking for a classic looking chopper, you can’t go wrong with either of these two models.
Both the Texas chopper and the K9, where the top-of-the-line for American Ironhorse and Big Dog Motorcycles, respectively.
Unfortunately, American iron horse motorcycles and big dog motorcycles both went bankrupt. American iron horse motorcycles produced its last bike in 2008. Big dog motorcycles produced its last bike in 2011.
Luckily, because of the popularity of these two motorcycle manufacturers and the fact that they used S&S engines, (which are still being produced today)finding replacement parts and maintaining the motorcycles is not a problem.
Personally, I believe it was the major downturn we saw in the US economy, that started in 2006, that precipitated the demise of both of these companies. After all, these semi custom motorcycles were never use for commuting and really how many people could afford a $35,000 plus motorcycle when the value of their home plunged below the amount of their mortgage?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Big Dog produced a single motorcycle in its first year, affectionately known as “Old Smokey”; its over-sized fenders and classic cruiser style would point the way for all of the company’s later products. By 1997, the company had reached $2 million in sales, and in 2000, the company had expanded so much that a move to a new, 110,000-square-foot (10,000 m2) factory and world headquarters (since expanded to 175,000 square feet) was required. As of 2007, the company had over 100 associated dealers, and employed over 300 people.

I have imported a large number of both Bog Dogs and Iron Horses into Australian over the past few years and whilst I like both bikes I think the Big Dog range is slightly more appealing .
As well they just seem to be finished off a little better ? And have a more consistent product .
To be totally honest I still think I would take my Harley Softail over them both.
Still hard to out do what Harley Davidson has been doing well for over a hundred years.
Robbie,
Thanks for your comments. For me I lean slightly for the Texas Chopper for two reasons . . . the look of the one-piece swinging arm versus the A-frame type swinging arm on the big dog. Secondly, and I know it’s a small matter, but I really love their camshell design speedometer/instrument panel that fits right between the handlebars.
