Chopper motorcycle DIY maintenance
Chopper motorcycle DIY maintenance
I’m talking about do-it-yourself maintenance for chopper motorcycles but, all these motorcycle checks would apply to almost any other motorcycle. as well.
Keep in mind, It’s little things like these checks and maintenance that can keep you from being stuck on the side of the highway on some lonely mountain road. But not only that, doing motorcycle maintenance for yourself will save you quite a bit of money compared to bringing it into the dealer, and also, provides great satisfaction in knowing that you were able to do it and that it’s been done correctly.

It was just a few years back on a ride up to Julian California, which is about 50 miles outside of San Diego, that I ran into my first gas filter problem. It was totally my fault because I forgot to check the gas filter prior to the riding season starting up. Gas filters on motorcycles are really important, especially on older bikes because a lot of times the inside of your gas tank is going to start to corrode and rust. This is what can end up killing your carburetor if you don’t have a gas filter, and clogging up your gas filter, stalling your bike out on the highway.
Also, many motorcycle riders have never checked their reserve valve, and then the time might come when they accidentally run out of gas. Because the opening for the reserve valve is closer to the bottom of the tank, you can get some tank rust in there and/or, just some bad gas.
As you can see in the video this is a very simple check to do and one that should be done every riding season. Cleaning or replacing your air filter should also be done every year. This keeps your bike running at top performance and keeps crap out of your engine and carburetor.
