San Diego Motorcycle Drone Video

This was the first test of having my Yuneec Typhoon Q500 automatically follow me while I’m riding my American Ironhorse Texas Chopper.

Prior to the development of the ‘watch me’ and ‘follow me’ modes for UAVs, there would have to be a separate drone operator to follow the motorcycle rider. Now, this can be done with just one person … the motorcycle rider themselves!

American Ironhorse Texas ChopperCurrently when in this ‘watch me’ mode, the maximum speed is supposedly 22 miles an hour. From this first test, I concluded that there is an initial lag from the time that I was moving until the drone got up to speed.

I’m pretty certain that if I would’ve continued along at a pace under 22 miles an hour the drone would have caught up and been able to keep me within the video frame. But, because this was a first test, I wanted to exercise quite a bit of caution, and so kept the riding area relatively short. In future tests, once I locate a nice open area, perhaps something like the Bonneville Salt Flats, I’ll be able to give this feature an extended test to determine its full aerial motorcycle riding photography capabilities.

You’re probably right, but I don’t think the resulting video would be a smooth as this video. Plus, this was a first test in a limited space, on a public street. Supposedly, in this particular flying mode the top speed of the drone would be approximately 22 miles an hour. I just have to find an open area that’s clear of trees and other obstacles where I can do the second test.

This particular model, because it’s made for installation of your own camera runs about $900

Thanks for posting this– looks like a cool idea! I’ll be looking forward to the second test to see how it does over a couple of miles.

As this capability is perfected I can see some great action sports uses.

Wow… Drone technology seems to be advancing very quickly.

To me, it’s really amazing that this drone can lock in on you and follow you. Can’t wait for my first package delivery by drone.

Oh, by the way, that’s a way cool chopper that your riding.
