World’s First Motorcycle
Daimler Reitwagen 1885 This is a 1986 replica:
Specifications: wood frame, handlebar steering, 36” wheelbase, 110lbs., single cylinder engine, vertical, air cooler, full stroke 58 X
100 mm, hot tube ignition, 2:1 compression ratio, 16 cu. in., 0.5 horsepower, single belt drive transmission, no reverse.
A little bit of history- Gottleib Daimler never intended to make a motorcycle as we know it. He was an engine builder who found that when testing new motors the results on the bench were often different from those gotten through practical application. He created this ‘vehicle’ so that he would have a rolling testbed for his engines. The only reason there is a seat is so that he could make critical adjustments on the fly.
