If you’ve been tracking the results from the major auction blocks lately—particularly the massive Mecum Las Vegas event—you’ve likely noticed a change in the air. For years, the story was one of “record-breaking” highs and “unprecedented” demand. But as we move through 2026, the data suggests a significant market correction is underway.

While the “Blue Chip” unicorns still command six figures, the meat of the market—the bikes that regular collectors buy, ride, and trade—is seeing a noticeable softening. Here is a breakdown of what is happening and why the “bloom is off the rose” for many vintage enthusiasts.

The Mecum Reality Check

At the most recent Mecum Las Vegas auction, the “big headliners” still made waves. We saw a 1968 Honda CB750 Prototype fetch over $313,000, and a 2004 Honda RC174 Replica top the charts at $330,000.

However, looking past the top 1%, the numbers tell a different story. Many “bread and butter” classics—like standard 1970s Japanese fours (the Honda CBs and Kawasaki Z1s) and common 1960s British twins—are struggling to reach the heights they hit during the 2021-2023 “COVID boom.” Sellers who expected 2022 prices are frequently seeing their bikes go unsold or hammering for 15-20% less than previous peaks.

Why Is It Happening?

Several factors are converging to create this “perfect storm” for the collector market:

1. The Demographic “Age-Out”

The most significant factor is simple biology. The “Baby Boomer” generation, which has been the primary engine of the collector market for decades, is beginning to age out of active riding. As long-time collectors downsize their estates or stop riding heavy vintage machines, a massive amount of inventory is hitting the market simultaneously.

2. The “New Blood” Gap

While Gen Z and Millennials appreciate vintage aesthetics, they aren’t entering the collector market at the same volume as previous generations. High interest rates, rising living costs, and a preference for “experiences over possessions” mean there are fewer buyers ready to shell out $15,000 for a 50-year-old bike that requires constant maintenance.

3. Post-Pandemic Correction

During the pandemic, disposable income and boredom fueled an artificial spike in prices. Many “investors” jumped into the motorcycle market hoping for quick flips. Now that the world has returned to normal and the economy has tightened, that “hot money” is exiting, leaving behind a market based on actual enthusiasts rather than speculators.

4. The Rising Cost of Complexity

For bikes from the 1990s and early 2000s (the “RADwood” era), maintenance is becoming a deterrent. As parts for early electronic fuel injection systems and specialized components become “No Longer Available” (NLA), these bikes are being viewed more as liabilities than assets.
