DIY – Motorcycle Belt Tension
How to set your Motorcycle Belt Tension
A properly cared for drive belt can last a hundred thousand miles, and maintaining it just means checking its condition and tension about as often as you change the oil and filter.
A motorcycle drive belt that it too tight will whine and can cause transmission leaks or belt failure. A belt that it too loose or misaligned can jump cogs on the rear drive sprocket.
How to set your Motorcycle Belt Tension
How to motorcycle belt tension. Here’s how to check the drive belt tension on a motorcycle with a special tool.
Sure, you could do this without this special tool if you like, but don’t you want to be accurate when you’re making an adjustment like this on your motorcycle?
Harley-Davidson recommends that you buy a special tool to check the drive belt tension on your motorcycle. as you’ll see this is a very simple adjustment to make, but also a very important one if you want to extend the life of your drive belt and excess wear on your wheel pulley.
In this video we’ll show you how to inspect your belt and also what to look for when doing so.
Having a belt tension gauge is critical to accurately reading the deflection and making sure it’s properly adjusted.
You’ll also need a service manual for directions and steps specific to your own bike. My thanks to Curtis of Wild Steed Worx in Valley Ctr., California (www.wildsteedworx.com/) for his time in giving a clear explanation and demonstration of how to adjust a motorcycle drive belt.
