Did you know May 1 marks return of international day celebrating women riding motorcycles?
Women make up 20 percent of motorcyclists, a figure that has doubled in the past decade alone, according to a study by the Motorcycle Industry Council. That number is even larger in some communities of color. Forty one percent of Latinx motorcyclists are women, and 53 percent of Black motorcyclists are women, according to a 2018 MRI-Simmons survey.
Most women ride the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 SuperLow. These motorcycles have long been Harley’s entry-level model, and since Harley dominates female market share, and women are the fastest growing segment of new riders, it makes sense that Harley-Davidson’s entry-level model would be the most popular motorcycle ridden by women today.
Yes, with women making up about one out of five motorcycle riders, it’s not uncommon to see them at motorcycle events and on rides throughout the country. But, there are no statistics on the number of women chopper motorcycle riders! The prevailing guesstimate on the number of chopper writers versus other motorcycle riders is about 2%! What I’m saying here, is that of all motorcycle riders mail and female just 2% are writing choppers! So, it is extremely rare to ever see a women chopper motorcycle rider!
Perhaps rarest of all, I have to put it on the same scale as seeing the abominable snowman, is to see a woman motorcycle rider who also knows how to and does maintain her own bike!
