Big Dog Motorcycle Oil Change

Big Dog Motorcycle Oil Change

Changing the motor oil on a 2007 big dog motorcycles K9 model with a S&S 117 in.³ the twin engine.

Here in Southern California I think a motorcyclist would be hard-pressed to find any big the twin motorcycle dealer  who would charge less than about $120 for a motorcycle oil and filter change.

So, needless to say changing your own motorcycles motor oil and oil filter will save you a lot of money as well as provide a sense of accomplishment. But, probably the most important thing you can get out of doing your own minor maintenance including this motorcycle oil and filter change is the fact that when you’re finished you know that it’s been done right!

To find the correct torque specifications and fluid levels and the amounts be sure to consult your owners manual. Not only are the specifications different for different bikes but they could well be different for different model years of the same bike as well.

Personally, I always use full synthetic (20/50) oil for the motor and regular 20/50 dinosaur oil for the primary drive. when it comes to the  motorcycle oil filter I use the chrome K&N filter.

If you have all your tools and supplies set up ahead of time, and you schedule this oil change for when you get back from a ride, the whole thing really shouldn’t take you more than about 30 minutes or so. The majority of that time will be taken up just waiting for all the oil to drain out of the motorcycle oil tank. the Cayenne and filter that I use for my big dog K9 motorcycle with the SNS one 17 in.³ engine is the same one that I use for my American iron horse Texas chopper with the S&S one 11 in.³ engine. the filter is that K&N #KN-170C. What I really like about this filter is a fact that it has a 17 mm not at the end of the case which makes it extremely easy for putting on taking off without having to use a traditional oil filter wrench.

K&N motorcycle oil filterI understand that they also make the same filter with a black case. Keep in mind, like anything else of quality, these filters are going to cost you a little more than the standard no-name North Korean filters. But, I really believe what you get what you pay for, and since the oil is the lifeblood of your engine, you want the best filter out there to keep it as clean as possible

the 2007 big dog owners manual recommends that after the break in. The engine oil be changed every 2,500 miles. I follow that manufacturers recommendation with the exception that if I don’t get 2,500 miles in the season, I change the motor oil as well as a primary oil at least once a season.

Even though I always change the motor oil and the primary case oil at the same time the above video was running a little long, so I broke it up and will have a separate video on changing the primary drive oil later this month.
