Motorcycle Starting Problems
Motorcycle Starting Problems
Easy do it yourself fix, that is worth a try.
Usually if your bike hasn’t been used in a month or two, and when starting, it cranks over strong, most of the time it’s either an ignition or fuel problem.
Motorcycle Starting Problems
Here in Arizona the summers get pretty hot. Personally, if you haven’t started your bike on a regular basis, I think all the additives in the fuel can gum up your carburetor. This seems to be what happened to me, after about 2 months of not riding my bike here in Peoria Arizona.
There are several reasons why your motorcycle might be cranking over but not starting. Here are some of the most common:
Fuel issues:
- Empty fuel tank: This is the most obvious reason. Make sure your fuel tank has enough gas in it.
- Fuel pump problems: The fuel pump may be malfunctioning or clogged.
- Clogged fuel filter: The fuel filter may be clogged with debris, preventing fuel from reaching the engine.
- Faulty fuel injectors: On fuel-injected motorcycles, the fuel injectors may be clogged or malfunctioning.
Spark issues:
- Bad spark plugs: The spark plugs may be worn out, fouled, or gapped incorrectly.
- Faulty ignition coil: The ignition coil may be malfunctioning and not creating enough spark to ignite the fuel.
- Damaged spark plug wires: The spark plug wires may be damaged or cracked, preventing the spark from reaching the plugs.
Air intake issues:
- Clogged air filter: A clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, making it difficult for it to start.
- Air leaks: Air leaks can cause the engine to run lean, making it difficult to start.
Other potential causes:
- Dead battery: Even if the battery has enough power to crank the engine, it may not have enough power to start it.
- Faulty kill switch: The kill switch may be malfunctioning and preventing the engine from starting.
- Faulty starter motor: The starter motor may be malfunctioning and not engaging the engine flywheel.
- Sensor problems: A malfunctioning sensor, such as the crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor, can prevent the engine from starting.
Troubleshooting tips:
-
Start by checking the simple things first, such as the fuel level and the battery voltage.
-
If you’re not sure what the problem is, it’s best to take your motorcycle to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
-
Here are some additional tips for troubleshooting a motorcycle that won’t start:
-
Check the owner’s manual for specific troubleshooting steps for your motorcycle.
-
Use a spark tester to check for spark at the spark plugs.
-
Clean or replace the spark plugs and air filter if necessary.
-
Check for fuel leaks and repair any that you find.
-
Test the battery voltage and replace the battery if it’s weak.
-
Visually inspect the wiring for any damage.
By following these tips, you should be able to diagnose the problem and get your motorcycle back up and running.
