For many motorcycle riders, the chopper epitomizes individuality, sleek styling and naturally a true muscle machine. Choppers traditionally are not made for hairpin turns or acceleration off the line.

Choppers are made for in town-riding and cruising the highways usually no more than a couple of hundred miles from their garage. Now, with choppers being relatively just a couple of percent of the entire motorcycle population, their appearance on the highway, local motorcycle event or just the local biker bar always creates a lot of attention and admiration. A short chopper ride from San Diego to El Cajon California. El Cajon is just east of San Diego California. My bike is a 2017 Big Dog k9 clone with a Insta360 One X camera mounted on a selfi-stick, attached with clamps to the base of the handlebars.

San Diego Motorcycle Event

Majestic Wine Mixer fund raiser for Cammies & Canines, an amazing organization saving lives 2 at a time. Their mission to end Veteran homelessness is paired with rescuing dogs from being euthanized. A great cause, an exceptional event and many good looking motorcycles.

I guess technically you can and say this was a San Diego motorcycle event, but, because there were so many bikers with good-looking bikes there, it may as well have been. Besides the ever present Harleys, there was a good-looking Big Bear chopper, big dog K-9, a number of good-looking rigid choppers and even one of the lowest to the ground Honda choppers that I’ve ever seen. What chopper rider doesn’t like to look at other cool bikes?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: A chopper is a type of custom motorcycle which emerged in California in the late 1950s. The chopper is perhaps the most extreme of all custom styles, often using radically modified steering angles and lengthened forks for a stretched-out appearance. They can be built from an original motorcycle which is modified (“chopped”) or built from scratch. Some of the characteristic features of choppers are long front ends with extended forks often coupled with an increased rake angle, hardtail frames (frames without rear suspension), very tall “ape hanger” or very short “drag” handlebars, lengthened or stretched frames, and larger than stock front wheels. The “sissy bar”, a set of tubes that connect the rear fender with the frame, and which are often extended several feet high, is a signature feature on many choppers. Perhaps the best known choppers are the two customized Harley-Davidsons, the “Captain America” and “Billy Bike”, seen in the 1969 film Easy Rider. (more…)

We know the damn things aren’t practical and most of you if you don’t like baseball you probably won’t like this bike. It seems there are people who always want to take a look to its extreme or radical possibility. Unfortunately, when doing this, especially on an auto or motorcycle handling and therefore safety are compromised.

Yes, it’s one thing to put on a long front end just for shows, but to actually operate a motorcycle with one of these radical extended front ends and extreme rake, is just an accident waiting to happen! (more…)

The motorcycle in this video is a Big Dog K9 motorcycle with an S&S 117 in.³ fuel injected V-Twin engine. This video shows part of my ride from Orange County California to San Diego CA. The video was shot with a Samsung Gear 360 camera. Watch the Big Dog k9 motorcycle ride below:

This Samsung camera is a relatively small 360° camera that can be mounted using standard GoPro mounts.  I’m riding the Big Dog with the camera is mounted on the right side of my helmet.

I’m also using Corel Video Studio X10 to edit the footage and convert it from 360° video into standard video. (more…)

Radical Choppers

Radical Choppers – taking it too far!

For me the first thing that comes to mind when watching this video is that these bikers have taken it way too far as far as extended front ends go. Having a super long extended front end like this really changes the whole geometry of the motorcycle. I just have to believe that riding a motorcycle with such a long front end is really an accident waiting to happen. Plus, what about cornering and maneuverability?

Sure, I can appreciate bikers modifying their rights to suit their own individuality, but if they intend to ride these custom creations, I think safety has to factor into any modifications.

These motorcycles are just impractical and stupid. Make a bike uncomfortable and plan unsafe for the rider & anyone else around when they loses control. (more…)
