This jey bike has 350 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, Jay Leno’s 1999 Y2K Jet Bike packs a lot of power, in a small package!
Coolest start-up sound. Needs to be in a superhero movie.
It’s not a jet (turbojet) engine, it’s a turboshaft engine. A jet engine produces thrust, this produces torque. Instead of the exhaust going through a nozzle and producing thrust, it drives a power turbine attached to an output shaft instead.
Y2K Jet Bike
465lb/ft torque oh – – – For people who may not know. 50lb/ft is great for most 400lb bikes. 85+lb/ft is reaching omg levels. But, 475 pound feet is just out of this world.
So much more to say about this bike! The gallon of ‘gas’ is jet fuel–a mix of kerosene and gasoline. How careful does Jay have to be to mount the bike given the exhaust temperatures? Are those special soles on his boots? Is that flat seat comfortable for very long? How far back do vehicles have to stay to be ‘safe?’ Did I understand Jay to say that there is still major thrust from the turbine even when stopped? More could have been said about that. This ‘squib’ was way to short to cover such a fascinating subject!
Wicked, but cool as hell! Just firing it up worths the expense, I guess. Imagine those unaware of this bike’s existence waiting for a regular bike’s engine starting sound and then… priceless.
Jay Leno’s Garage
After retiring from his perch atop the American late-night TV ratings in 2014, comedian Jay Leno has more time to partake in one of his passions: collecting cars. That is the focus of `Jay Leno’s Garage’, which showcases the `Tonight Show’ veteran’s journey throughout America as he searches for unique rides and the stories behind them. Leno explores different aspects of automobiles, including the history of iconic brands, testing supercars, checking out the latest innovations, and even offering consumer advice. He also talks with fellow gearheads, including celebrities, to learn about their collections. Leno says cars, to him, are “kinetic artwork” – rather than being stagnant, it is art that is “rolling down the highway.”
