When it comes to doing your own motorcycle maintenance, changing your primary case oil is perhaps one of the easiest preventive maintenance procedures that you can tackle on your own.
In this video I’m doing the primary oil change on a 2007 Big Dog K-9 motorcycle. the basics of this procedure are pretty similar for all makes and models of motorcycles. But, with that said before starting any motorcycle maintenance or repair, you definitely want to check with your owners manual on how the manufacturer recommends it be done
It should be obvious that even the same model motorcycle from year-to-year can have different specifications on doing maintenance procedures so this is why it’s critical when you’re tackling this yourself to do the research before undertaking the motorcycle maintenance. if you can’t find your owners motorcycle manual or the shop manual, I would suggest that you contact your dealer who may be able to supply you with a PDF of these documents. If there’s just no way that you can get a hold of the information that you need, I would suggest that you bring your motorcycle into a qualified motorcycle mechanic and watch and get the information from them how they perform the procedure. Doing it this way will cost you some extra money but the next time it’s up for this same maintenance hopefully you’ll be able to tackle it on your own.
Personally, in my big dog motorcycle manual, after the engine break-in period it recommends to change their primary fluid every 5,000 miles, personally, I change it every time I changed my motor oil which is at least once per year or at 2,500 miles whichever comes first.
